Archaeology (archeology in American English) refers to the study of human cultures in order to better understand our long-term human prehistory, history, behavior and cultural evolution. This is achieved through the recovery, analysis and documentation of material remains which could include artefacts (artifacts in American English), architecture, organic material (known as biofacts or ecofacts), human remains and their location within the landscape.
Since our hunts started over a decade ago we have made an increasing number of unexpected finds of serious historical importance.
Mass Bruce’s Bronze Age axe head hoard, Ohio Bud’s Saxon gold dagger cheaf and other finds have been purchased by museums after valuation by Treasure inquests.
Extensive research on land we have permission to use by Canadian Rod suggests there’s plenty more to come in the future so in order to ensure the correct handling of these important discoveries I have formally undertaken archeology studies which include:
- Early history
- Site ID
- Site survey
- Recovery and dating
- Artefact preservation
- Research and archive records
- Site case studies
- and more…
I attended a major dig over the summer getting hands on practical training. It appears that a large proportion of the land we hunt has seen intense early activity and it can only be a matter of time before other major discoveries are found!
Check out the new page on the Roman Villa dig training course I attended in June 2005.
